California flu season

California flu season refers to the annual period of elevated influenza activity across the state of California. Like most of the United States, California typically experiences increased influenza transmission from early fall through late spring, with peak activity occurring between December and February. The season is shaped by the state's diverse climate zones, population density, and public-health infrastructure.[1]

California experiences substantial fluctuations in influenza activity, with some regions reporting consistently higher transmission rates than others. During the 2025-2026 flu season, the state recorded widespread and intense influenza circulation, with every county reporting either high or very high levels of activity. More than 154,000 laboratory-confirmed cases had been reported by early February 2026, though wastewater surveillance suggests the true number was significantly higher.[2]
