2025–2026 United States flu season

The 2025–2026 United States flu season refers to the seasonal influenza activity taking place from fall 2025 through winter 2026 in the United States.[1]

A new subclade of influenza A (H3N2) viruses, subclade K, emerged and became the predominant virus among influenza A viruses that have been genetically characterized in the United States and globally.[2]

For the week ending December 27, the CDC reported that nearly 1 in 10 outpatient visits nationwide, as in 8.2%, were for flu-like illnesses, the highest levels since the CDC began tracking such visits in 1997. The flu season at that point had accounted for more than 11 million illnesses and 120,000 hospitalizations.[3]

As of late January 2026, the CDC estimates that there have been at least 20 million illnesses, 270,000 hospitalizations, and 11,000 deaths from the flu in the United States during the 2025–2026 season.[4] As of February 6, 2026, the CDC reports that influenza activity remains high nationally, although some areas are seeing stabilization or a decline in flu cases.[5]

The 2025–2026 season has surpassed the 2024–2025 United States flu season, which was considered a “high severity” season by the CDC.[6]
