Pioneras: solo querían jugar is an upcoming sports drama film directed by Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz. Its cast is led by Sofía de Iznájar and Bruna Lucadamo.
Plot
Starting in 1970, the plot follows a group of girls and an young coach as the girls break down barriers in a deeply sexist society and take the baby steps of women's football in Spain.[1][2]

Production
An homage to the pioneers of women's football in Spain and to Rafael Muga,[3] Pioneras was written by Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz and Zebina Guerra.[6][1] The film is a Spanish-Portuguese co-production by Pioneras la Película AIE, Cine365 Films, Nadie es Perfecto, Ciudadano Ciskul, and Bando A Parte, with financial backing from RTVE, Movistar Plus+, ICAA and CreaSGR.[7] The documentation phase was carried out with the involvement of Victoria Hernández, Isabel Fuentes, Conchi Sánchez, and Rafael Muga.[8] Maria Codina worked as director of photography, using Alexa 35 cameras and Tribe anamorphic Blackwing lenses.[1] In April 2025, Pioneras was reported to have wrapped in Madrid after six weeks and a half of filming.[7][2] In addition to the streets of Villaverde, shooting locations also included Tenerife and Guadalajara.[7][8]
Release
The film will screen in the official selection of the 29th Málaga Film Festival.[9] Filmax handles the Spanish theatrical distribution. The theatrical release is expected for 5 June 2026.[5][10]
