Memorial Park, also known as the Mosgiel Memorial Gardens, is a public park and destination playground in Mosgiel, Dunedin, New Zealand. It is managed by the Dunedin City Council and features extensive gardens, a large playground, picnic areas and adjacent sports fields. The park is part of the city's destination playground network, alongside Marlow Park and Woodhaugh Gardens.[1]
Location
Memorial Park is located in central Mosgiel, near Gordon Road and Hartstonge Avenue, and is easily accessible from surrounding residential areas. The gardens and open spaces connect with pedestrian paths and link to adjacent community facilities, including the Mosgiel Library and the Te Puna o Whakaehu aquatic centre.[2]
History
In 1967, the Mosgiel chapter of the Jaycees approached the Mosgiel Borough Council with plans for a botanic garden at the site, leading to the garden's initial design and establishment.[3]
Playground facilities were later added in the 1990s, and community groups helped fund and develop improvements, including a major upgrade supported by the Taieri Community Facilities Trust in the 2000s. Further investment by the council in 2020 added inclusive play elements to enhance accessibility for all children and families.[4]
In 2023, the nearby aquatic and community facility Te Puna o Whakaehu opened, reflecting broader community development in the Mosgiel Recreation Area. The park continues to be included in council playground planning and upgrades.[5]
Facilities
Memorial Park includes a variety of features for all ages:[6]
- Landscaped gardens and picnic areas with benches and well‑maintained paths.
- A large destination playground with multiple play structures, inclusive equipment, and fenced areas for younger children.[7]
- Accessible public toilets and supporting amenities.
- Open grassed spaces and sports fields used for football, athletics, cricket and informal recreation.[8]
- Proximity to adjacent community facilities, including the Mosgiel Library and Te Puna o Whakaehu community aquatic centre.
Use
Memorial Park is widely used for informal recreation, family outings and community events. The playground draws families from across the Dunedin area thanks to its destination playground status and well‑kept garden setting.[9]
Redevelopment plans
Memorial Park's playground and garden areas are included in the Dunedin City Council's destination playground planning, which aims to retain and modernise facilities across the city's major play spaces. Concept designs were developed in consultation with the community to enhance play experiences, improve accessibility, and expand recreational amenities, while retaining the park's landscaped gardens and open spaces.[10] The designs explore new play elements suitable for a broad age range, connections between play areas and community spaces, and improved facilities for families, reflecting the park's role as a destination playground in Mosgiel.
As part of the council's nine‑year playground programme, approximately NZ$3.07 million has been provisionally allocated for the Mosgiel Memorial Gardens upgrade. Detailed design and construction are planned to follow upgrades at Marlow Park and Woodhaugh Gardens, with timing and exact scope subject to annual budget approval. The funding allows for modernisation of play equipment, enhanced accessibility, and integration of recreational spaces with adjacent facilities, including the Mosgiel Library and Te Puna o Whakaehu community aquatic centre.[11]
