Master of the Ship is a 1928 Ukrainian novel by writer Yuriy Yanovskyi.[1] English-language sources render the title in different ways, including Master of the Ship, The Ship’s Figurehead, and The Shipmaster.[2][3]

Reception and legacy

Yanovskyi’s early works including Master of the Shipare often treated as classics of the Ukrainian literary revival of the first half of the twentieth century.[1] The novel has continued to function as a point of reference in later writing about 1920s Odesa and Ukrainian cinema, including as an explicit intertext for Ivan Kozlenko’s novel Tanzher.[3]
