Introduction
Founded in 1943 in Belo Horizonte, Colégio Loyola (Loyola School) is an institution affiliated with the Society of Jesus, a religious order founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The school is part of the Jesuit Education Network (Rede Jesuíta de Educação, "RJE"), which operates in more than 80 countries and includes 17 schools in Brazil.
The institution has approximately 2,300 students and about 330 staff members, including both teaching and non-teaching professionals. Its practices follow educational guidelines adopted by the Society of Jesus, including academic and formative activities in various areas.
History
On March 19, 1943, the official inauguration of Colégio Loyola took place. At the time, the school was located at Rua Gonçalves Dias, 1218, in Belo Horizonte, in a building donated by Francisco de Freitas Lobato. Prior to that, the property had been used by artists and intellectuals associated with the modernist movement in the 1920s.
The inaugural Mass was held on March 25, 1943, a date later designated as the institution’s anniversary. In 1949, the school was relocated to Avenida do Contorno, 7919, in the Cidade Jardim neighborhood, where it remains to this day.
