Iqbal Hassan Mahmood (Bengali: ইকবাল হাসান মাহমুদ), also known as Tuku (Bengali: টুকু), is a politician of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a member of the national standing committee of the party. He is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sirajganj-2 and minister of power, energy, and mineral resources.[1][2]

Early life and background

Mahmood was born on 10 May 1950 into a Bengali Muslim family of Taluqdars in the village of Koyelgati in Sheyalkol Union, Sirajganj which was formerly in Pabna District, Pakistan. His father was Abdullah al Mahmood, a noted politician and former minister in East Pakistan, and his grandfather was Derazuddin Taluqdar.[3]

Career

Mahmood served as the state minister of power in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government from 2001 to 2006.[4] Mahmood currently serves as the minister of power, energy, and mineral resources of Bangladesh.[5]

In March 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case alleging that he had amassed Tk 2.57 crore through illegal means and concealed information in his wealth statement.[6] In November 2007, a special court sentenced him to nine years' imprisonment and fined him Tk 50 lakh.[6] He appealed, and the High Court acquitted him of all charges in June 2011. However, during the Sheikh Hasina government, the ACC appealed and the Appellate Division later set aside the acquittal and ordered a fresh hearing.[7] In May 2023, the High Court upheld the conviction.[6] BNP leaders claim this was a politically motivated false conviction amid unrest.[8] After the fall of the Awami League government, in September 2025, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court acquitted him, overturning the conviction and clearing him of all charges.[9]

Family

Mahmood is the eldest son of Abdullah al Mahmood, Minister of Industries and Natural Resources of Pakistan, and the brother-in-law of former Deputy Prime Minister of Bangladesh Mohammad Abdul Matin.[10] State Minister M. A. Muhit is his nephew.[11] His daughter is married to a son of Awami League politician Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim of the Sheikh family of Tungipara.[12]
