Ilham Akbar Habibie (born 16 May 1963) is an Indonesian aviation expert of Gorontalo descent.[1] The Habibie family originates from Kabila, a district in Gorontalo Province.[2][3] Ilham is the first child of Hasri Ainun Habibie and B. J. Habibie, the 3rd president of Indonesia.[4]

As an aeronautical engineer, through PT Regio Aviasi Industri, he initiated the Regio Prop Program, a domestic commercial aircraft project that is a further development of the IPTN N-250.[5][6] He collaborated with Erry Firmansyah, the former president director of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), to establish PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI). Following in his parents' footsteps, he has focused on fulfilling his father's dream for Indonesia to continue producing its own aircraft.[7]

In the 2024 West Java gubernatorial election, he ran as a candidate for Vice Governor of West Java alongside Ahmad Syaikhu, supported by the PKS and the Nasdem Party.[8]

Education

Ilham was born and raised in West Germany, where he lived for nearly 31 years while accompanying his father. He completed his primary education at Elementary School Windmühlenweg and his secondary education at High School Hochrad, both in Hamburg. He then pursued higher education at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), enrolling in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering with a focus on aeronautical engineering.[9]

In 1987, he obtained the degree of Diplom-Ingenieur from TUM, graduating cum laude. He later continued his academic career at the same university and, in 1994, earned the degree of Doktor-Ingenieur in aeronautical engineering, graduating summa cum laude.[10]

In addition to his engineering qualifications, Ilham undertook executive and business studies. In 1999, he completed the International Executive Program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, and Singapore. In 2003, he obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago.[11]

Personal life and family

Ilham Habibie married Insana Abdul Adjid in 1987 in Jakarta. Their wedding reception was held according to Gorontaloan customs, reflecting the heritage of the Habibie family's ancestral home in Kabila, Gorontalo.[12]

His Gorontaloan ancestry traces back to his great-grandparents in Gorontalo, who were prominent cattle and horse breeders, traditional leaders, and respected religious figures in the region.[13]

The B.J. Habibie family has maintained a significant focus on development in Gorontalo, particularly through educational initiatives. This includes the establishment of MAN Insan Cendekia Gorontalo, founded one year after the first MAN Insan Cendekia in Serpong. Additionally, the family has provided various scholarship programs for students in the province.[14][15]

Ilham and Insana have three children: Nadia Habibie, Muhammad Pasha Nur Fauzan Habibie, and Tifani Mutiarahati Rahima Tahira Habibie. Nadia was born in Munich, Pasha in the United States, and Tifani in Bandung.
