The Church of Saint-Paixent is a Romanesque church in the commune of Saint-Paixent, in the Vienne department of France.[1] Documented as a dependency of the Abbey of Moutier-d’Ahun and later the seat of a small priory, the church became a parish church in the 19th century.[2][3]

History

The church is documented from 1124 as a dependency of the Abbey of Moutier-d’Ahun and remained associated with a small priory until the French Revolution.[4][5]

Architecture

The church retains Romanesque architectural features, including a polylobed portal, rounded arches, and a square-plan bell tower with a domed crossing.[6][7]

Statue of Our Lady of Saint-Paixent

The church contains a statue of the Virgin Mary known locally as Notre-Dame de Saint-Paixent, described as polychrome stone in local and tourism descriptions.[8]

Protection

The church was designated as a Monument historique in 1973.[9]
