Bimal Ghosh, (Bengali: বিমল ঘোষ) better known by his pen name Moumachi (english meaning: Honeybee), (18 March, 1910 - 7 March, 1982) was an Indian Bengali poet and writer. He is remembered for his contributions to Bengali poetry and for works such as Changa Byanga, Europer Agnikone etc.[1]

Life and career

Bimal Ghosh wrote under the pseudonym Moumachi and became known among Bengali readers for his poetic style and literary presence.[2] He was born in Beliatore, Bankura district in Bengal to Anadiprasanna Ghosh and Brajabala Devi. After completing his schooling at George High School in Kolkata, he studied printing and advertising at the Government College of Art & Craft. Ghosh began his literary journey while still a student, initially working in the advertising section of a magazine called Advance. Later he joined Anandabazar Patrika, where in 1940 he founded the children’s section “Anandamela.” This weekly column featured stories, poems, jokes, puzzles, drawings by children, and his own advice column called “Letters from Moumachi,” which became very popular. Through Anandamela, Ghosh also established a youth organization named “Monimela,” open to children under sixteen. Members were called “Moni” (gems), with older leaders titled “Madhamoni” and adult supporters as “Monirakshak/Rakshika.” Monimela spread beyond Bengal, reaching places like Patna in Bihar and even abroad. He wrote numerous stories, novels, dramas, and poems for young readers. In 1953, he was invited to speak at the Third World Youth Congress in Bucharest, Romania. During his travels in Eastern Europe (including Poland, Vienna, Germany, Austria, Hungary and France), he observed the effects of the Cold War, and his travel writings were later published as Europe’s Crucible (Europe’s Agnikone). Ghosh was also closely associated with Akashvani Kolkata (All India Radio, Kolkata) for many years. Among his famous books are Chengabenga, Kamal Pardeshi, and Europe’s Agnikone; he received a state award for Chengabenga. Another notable work of his was the popular play Mayamoyur.[1]

A letter published in Anandabazar Patrika on the occasion of his 110th birth anniversary reflects continued public remembrance of his literary identity.[3]
