Aurelio F. Rodríguez is a Cuban-American entrepreneur and technology executive best known as the founder of La Covacha, a Miami nightclub described by the Miami Herald as "a center for the whole Latin world" during the 1990s and 2000s.[1][2] Before his business career, Rodríguez worked as an international fashion model, appearing in campaigns for Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Armani with photographers Steven Meisel and Bruce Weber.[3][4][5][6] Rodríguez later founded EmailBrain, an email marketing platform acquired by Endurance International Group,[7][8] and served as Director of Business Operations at 8base, a low-code development platform.[9][10][11]
Early life and education
Rodríguez was born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents. His parents, Aurelio Rodríguez Sr. and Teresa Rodríguez, operated a truck stop on NW 25th Street in the Doral/Sweetwater area of Miami-Dade County.[12] He graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Finance.[13]
Modeling career
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Rodríguez worked as an international fashion model based in Miami. He was represented by the Irene Marie agency, where agent Richard Pullman promoted Cuban male models to top fashion clients.[4] According to modeling agent Jason Kanner, Rodríguez "was one of the first Dolce & Gabbana guys that Steven Meisel shot when the brand was formed,"[4] with one such campaign running in L'Uomo Vogue in October 1991.[5] He was also featured in the Versace Autumn-Winter 1989/90 campaign photographed by Bruce Weber.[6]
Rodríguez appeared in a Miami fashion editorial in Rolling Stone in February 1991,[14] and in campaigns for Armani, with a 1999 Newsweek cover story describing him as "a former Armani model."[3] He also appeared in GQ magazine and in a promotional magazine for Request Jeans distributed with Details in 1992.[15]
La Covacha

In 1989, following his father's death, Rodríguez inherited the family truck stop and, together with his mother Teresa Rodríguez, converted it into a roadhouse-style bar and eventually a full nightclub called La Covacha.[12] The venue became an important platform for Latin music in Miami during the 1990s and 2000s, featuring genres including salsa, merengue, vallenato, and Latin rock.[16] A 1995 Billboard profile reported that the venue "draws a broad range of patrons," including "prominent attorneys, South Beach hipsters, and slumming celebs such as Madonna and Anjelica Huston."[2]
After a fire destroyed the venue in July 1995, Rodríguez rebuilt it with architect William Lane.[17] In 2000, Rodríguez undertook a million-dollar renovation that added a gourmet kitchen and backyard stage while preserving the club's rustic, open-air character.[16] Miami New Times noted that La Covacha was "South Florida's best bet for classic and contemporary salsa as well as the latest in merengue and vallenato," while "Sunday rocks as hard as ever, with Latin alternative bands blaring for a young Latin-American crowd."[16] The venue hosted performances by international acts including Calle 13, Orishas, and La Oreja de Van Gogh.[18][19]
Newsweek's 1999 "Generation Ñ" cover story identified the club as a Miami gathering place for bilingual, bicultural young Latinos.[3] A 2003 Miami Herald feature described La Covacha as "a center for the whole Latin world," noting that Rodríguez had adapted the club's programming to Miami's increasingly diverse Latin population. "These days you gotta figure out how to cater to Argentines or Colombians," Rodríguez told the Herald.[1] Miami New Times named La Covacha "Best Latin Club" four times: 1999, 2001, 2005, and 2015.[16][20][21]
By the mid-2000s, Rodríguez's sister Teresa Klumpp had assumed day-to-day management.[22] Rodríguez sold the business in 2014 after 25 years of operation; the venue continued under new ownership until August 2017, when it closed following controversy related to a dance competition video.[23][24]
Technology ventures
EmailBrain
In 2003, Rodríguez founded EmailBrain, a software-as-a-service email marketing platform based in Miami.[7][25] The platform provided HTML email templates, a WYSIWYG editor, list management, and campaign analytics for businesses of all sizes.[25] In July 2008, EmailBrain was acquired by Dotster, Inc., a subsidiary of Endurance International Group.[7][8][26]
Domain.com and Endurance International
Following the EmailBrain acquisition, Rodríguez served as Senior Director of Business and Marketing Services at Domain.com, a Dotster subsidiary. Domain.com provided web hosting and domain name registration solutions, part of a portfolio that also included Bluehost and HostGator.[27] A January 2010 press release announced Domain.com's launch of Dominio.com, a Spanish-language brand, with Rodríguez identified in international business development.[28] As Director of Email Marketing Products at Endurance International Group (later Newfold Digital), Rodríguez managed marketing products for an organization serving approximately 5 million customers worldwide.[29] Endurance was a NASDAQ-listed provider of cloud-based platform solutions for small and medium-sized businesses, with brands including Constant Contact, Bluehost, HostGator, and Domain.com.[29][27] In 2021, Endurance merged with Web.com to form Newfold Digital.[27]
8base
Rodríguez was an early team member of 8base, a Miami-based low-code development platform founded by Albert Santalo, former chairman and CEO of CareCloud.[11] The platform provides tools for building data models, APIs, and applications with reduced coding effort.[30] The company was named Startup of the Year at the 2019 Startup Grind Global Conference in Silicon Valley,[31] and raised a $10.6 million Series A funding round in 2022.[30]
Influence
Rodríguez has been cited as a figure in the growth of Miami as a center for the Latin music industry. A 2003 Miami Herald feature described La Covacha as having been "one of the centers of the Cuban and tropical night-life scene" in the mid-1990s, and later "a center for the whole Latin world" as Miami's Latin population diversified.[1] Newsweek's 1999 "Generation Ñ" cover story highlighted La Covacha as a gathering place for a new generation of bilingual, bicultural young Latinos in America.[3]
