Anna Elizabeth James (born September 29, 1978) is an American filmmaker who works as a director, screenwriter, and producer. She is primarily known for her work in independent feature films, including the psychological thriller Deadly Illusions (2021). She is also the founder of the production company Kiss and Tale Productions.[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life and education

Anna Elizabeth James was born in Greenbrae, California, and spent her early years in Northern California, including the Sacramento area, specifically the community of Fair Oaks within Sacramento County. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. During her graduate studies, she was selected to direct a competitive student project, the teen thriller Haven's Point.[6]

While completing her MFA, James sold the feature-length screenplay I Do Over to Skydance Media, marking her first professional screenwriting sale and contributing to her early career development in the film industry.[7]

Career

Feature films and television work

James made her feature directorial debut with Emma's Chance (2016),[8] a family-oriented drama released through Sony Pictures. She later directed Destined to Ride[9] (2018), continuing her work in youth-oriented and young adult–focused films, often associated with the “tween” or family adventure genre. In 2021, she directed the television film Sisters for Life.[10]

Her most widely recognized project to date is Deadly Illusions (2021), a psychological thriller that she wrote, directed, and produced through her company Kiss and Tale Productions. The film stars Kristin Davis, Dermot Mulroney, and Greer Grammer and was released globally by Netflix, with Voltage Pictures serving as the worldwide sales agent. Following its release on Netflix in March 2021, the film reached the number-one position, according to reporting by People.[11][12][13][14][15]

Later projects

Following Deadly Illusions, James continued to develop and produce genre-driven projects. Her 2024 psychological thriller Held Hostage in My House stars Amy Smart, Billy Zane, and Ne-Yo. The film was released on Netflix on October 15, 2025.[16][17] She has also been credited as a writer on Supercell (2023) and as a producer on Succubus (2024).[18][19][20][21]

Style and influences

James's work often draws inspiration from classic noir and psychological thrillers of the 1980s, which she reinterprets through a contemporary female perspective. Rather than adhering strictly to traditional genre formulas, her films frequently subvert established thriller conventions by centring narrative tension and point of view through female protagonists. Her approach has been characterised by an emphasis on atmosphere, character psychology, and narrative perspective, as well as by a focus on efficient, resource-conscious production models within independently financed projects.[22][23]
